Zen and Designer Ghea Panggabean Launched Songket Palembang Fine Porcelain

Jakarta, 26 March 2014

The Official Launch of Songket Palembang Fine Porcelain Designer Tableware Collection by Ghea Panggabean Creative Collaboration with Zen

The people of Indonesia are gifted with endless imagination and deeply artistic skills, and lovers of traditional textiles know that some of the most exotic handmade textiles on the planet have been made throughout the archipelago for hundreds of years. There is an amazing variety of unique cloth being produced in different areas throughout Indonesia, but one very special cloth that has come to be regarded as the indisputable Queen of Handwoven Textiles is known as Songket, and nowhere is it more highly developed than it is in the area around Palembang, South Sumatra.

Songket is a luxurious textile that is handwoven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. The metallic threads stand out against the background cloth to create a shimmering effect that is absolutely exquisite. Creating a single piece of songket is highly laborious work and it is amazing to consider that even the most intricate of designs are stored in the weaver’s memory and produced with very simple, traditional looms, as this intangible heritage is passed down from generation to generation.

Because of the luxurious threads used and because of the complex motifs created, Songket Palembang is well known to be one of the most expensive handwoven cloths on earth, yet the market demand is always high because this sacred textile is imbued with so much traditional philosophy associated with life’s rites of passage starting from birth to marriage to giving birth to death. Songket is a ceremonial cloth of intense beauty that only comes out during important moments or periods of transition in one’s life.

Ghea Panggabean, one of Indonesia’s senior fashion designers, never ceases to be amazed with the splendor and cultural magnificence of Palembang; and with the launch of her third fine porcelain tableware collection, this successful trendsetter has currently set her sights firmly on the allure of Songket Palembang.

Consistent in a career that spans more than 30 years, Ghea’s endless love of Indonesia is unmistakable and now, as she once again collaborates with Zen Fine Porcelain, her signature style and strength of character are eloquently expressed in a modern tableware collection that is truly overwhelming and irresistible.

The Songket Palembang fine porcelain designer tableware collection is a limited edition and is available in two classic combinations, namely maroon with antique gold and
forest green with antique gold.

Celebrating the grandeur and artistic excellence of Sumatra dating back to the glorious Sriwijaya Kingdom, culture lovers and textile aficionados alike can now create their own exquisite tablesettings with the Queen of Handwoven Textiles as interpreted by Ghea in her freshly launched Songket Palembang collection.

The Grand Launch of this Art Meets Fashion event is set for 26 March 2014 at Alun Alun Indonesia in Grand Indonesia and will be officiated by Ibu Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister of Tourism & Creative Economy. A select Guest List of 200 art, culture and fashion enthusiasts will have the privilege of viewing a sophisticated exhibition of the elegant tableware collection and will also be treated to a stylish High Tea, a traditional dance and a fashion presentation aptly entitled The Treasures of Sriwijaya. Included amongst the many distinguished guests are Ibu Alex Nurdin, wife of the Governor of South Sumatra and Ibu Tartila Ishak, wife of the Deputy Governor of South Sumatra. The dress code for the afternoon event is A Touch of Songket, and there will be an exclusive gift and certificate of appreciation awarded to person with the Most Unique Dress.

Ghea Panggabean Dalam Kolaborasi Bersama Zen
